Ruburnkumar Cruises to Victory in Men’s Open of MALAKOFF 26KM, Penang 2008 Run

Thais Dominate Men’s Veteran, Men’s Senior Veteran and Women’s Open Category

PENANG, August 10, 2008 – Malaysia ’s Ruburnkumar cruised to victory in the Men’s Open category of the inaugural Malakoff 26km Penang run a full 9 minutes ahead of the pack, while Thais dominated the Men’s Veteran, Men’s Senior Veteran and Women’s Open categories and took top honors in the Women’s Open category, that was held at the Youth Park , here today.

In the Men’s Open category Ruburnkumar clocked a very fast 1:36:26, with second place going to Ang Khian Beng in 1:50:59 and Ow Yong Jing Khuan coming in third in 1:53: 50, all from Malaysia .

The first five finishers with the fastest times in each category received product vouchers worth RM1,000, RM800, RM600, RM400 and RM200 respectively, as well as medals. A total of RM15,000 in product vouchers were given out aside from medals and certificates of participation.

A strong Thai contingent made a clean sweep of the Men’s Veteran category. It was a close fought race among Bunrit Deerod, Charoen Khangkharo and Thaworn Sathaporn Supphaphong clocking 1:45:07, 1:45:54 and 1:46:04 respectively for the first, second and third places.

The Men’s Senior Veteran category was also monopolized by the Thais with Wong Manomaya coming in at 1:57:55 and Chusak Mangthongkham second in 1:59:19 with Lin Tai San of Malaysia third in 2:09:23.

In the Malakoff 26km, Penang run Women’s Open category Thailand’s Mattika Rakkhaphan came in first in 2:06:42 beating Lynn Guan Yoke Ling (2:16:21) of Malaysia to second place. Third was Malaysian Jessica Tang Mei Lee (2:16:49).

The top three in the Women’s Veteran category was an all Malaysian affair with Tan Chin Fong clocking 2:14:49 to take the first place Ch’ng Lay Khim second in 2:23:17 and Jhana Choong third in 2:28:59.

The Malakoff 26km, Penang 2008 run is part of the sports development component of Malakoff Corporation Berhad’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme. The run is aimed at encouraging and promoting a healthier lifestyle among the local population, and simultaneously boosting the Penang tourism industry.

The company has been involved in the development of multi-sport and endurance events such as the run-bike-run duathlon in Malaysia , being the title sponsor of internationally accredited events such as the Malakoff Powerman Malaysia Series, and sponsoring the Malakoff University Duathlon Series, the Malakoff Malaysian Duathlon Series and the Malakoff Johor Run 2008 among others.


YB Lydia Yong Kok Fooi, Penang Exco for Youth & Sports, Family and Community Development presented the prizes to the winners.

Also in attendance was Majlis Perbandaran Pulau Pinang’s (MPPP) Director of Community Services, YBhg Tuan Haji Mohamad Ismail bin Ibrahim and En Mohd Shokri Daud, Plant Manager, Prai Power Plant represented Malakoff Corporation Berhad, as well as the representative of the race organiser Pacesetters Athletic Club Malaysia’s President, En. Rustam Affandi.
